You see a lot of people jump on the treadmill and run at a low to moderate pace for the duration of their workout. The argument is that we burn more calories from fat at a lower to moderate pace. There is some truth to that hypothesis.

However, sequencing the intensity between low and high not only burns more overall calories, but it will increase your aerobic capacity.
